Use your iPad as an external monitor, for free!

08 Apr

One of the things that I love about the iPad is its versatility. You can do almost anything with it, and that, for me, is great. I feel like I am getting my money’s worth.

So, first, you have to download ScreenRecycler. You can get it for free, however, you have a limited time use. I think that it’s pretty decent. When it times out, just restart it. So far, so good.

Then, you have to download Moca VNC Lite on your app and configure it. It’s pretty self intuitive. Just match the IP addresses.

Then you are done. You will notice some lag on the iPad, but it’s pretty good for wireless support.

Square | Start Accepting Credit Cards, Anywhere!

07 Apr

Are you a merchant, or an artist, or just like having cool free gadgets? Well, Square is for you!

Today I received my Square adapter, and I am excited; it looks great!

“Square enables people from all walks of life to accept credit and debit cards. Taxi drivers can get paid quickly without dealing with the headache of printers, pens and paper; a pastry chef that only sells at seasonal farmer’s markets now can accept payments without getting charged a monthly fee; food trucks now have a simple and mobile way to migrate from being limited to cash. You can even have your friend that owes you $20 pay you with their card since their wallet always seems to be empty when you remind them about it.”

Square currently accepts US issued Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards, all with the same flat rates. That’s pretty much all the major creditors, so you are set.

Even though Square is a great service, they do have a processing fee for their services:

2.75% for swiped transactions

3.5% + 15¢ for keyed-in transactions

So, for 2.75% you can take a credit card pretty much anywhere with a signal or WiFi. I think it’s pretty great, to be frank.

Technology Overload? Check this post out!

06 Apr

Okay, I think that we all can agree that there are too many choices out there regarding technology. Like, for example, watching a movie, we ‘just can’t decide whether to watch it via Netflix, AppleTV, Pay-Per-View, Amazon, Blu-ray, Boxee, Vudu, Roku, or whether I should watch it on my iPhone, my iPad, my laptop, my desktop or my TV. If I want, [we] can even download the movie to [the] iPhone and then stream it to [an] AppleTV.” We are “…confused enough when [we] had to choose between Betamax and VHS. What’s next, a hundred and eleven flavors of popcorn?” (Pell).

Now, choosing to read a book is another ordeal, you have to  “decide [whether] you want it in hardcover, paperback, or digital format, and if digital, which device, which app, which font size and which background…” I, for one, love the accessibility that e-Book provide. If you want to read a book you don’t have to lift a finger (well, maybe one finger, but that’s it.)

We also know that online shopping has been around for a while, and how exciting is to to shop “in your underwear” while you eat a manwhich and slobber all over your key-board?? I love America!

Well, now consumerism has taken another leap into the future. You can now talk to a salesperson, live, while you shop! How awesome is that? It’s called the 3Live Shop by B-Reel.

I personally prefer the tangibility that a real store offers. The ability browser around and check out the quality and feel of what you are buying. It’s certainly better than ordering something that seems great and top-notch in a couple pictures over the web, but when you get it in the mail feels cheap…you know, it has that made-in-china feel to it. Certainly, this is a great approach to real shopping. I commend them for really trying. Let’s see how it goes.

Why buy Log Me In, when TeamViewer is Free?

06 Apr

Many of us computer enthusiasts find ourselves needing to access our home computers on the road, on a friend’s house, or even out of state. When we leave for a week we can get a bit preoccupied; “what if I need a document, or something?”

TeamViewer has “more than 100,000,000 users in countries all over the world [and] is one of the fastest growing solutions for remote control and remote presentation.” I’ve been a loyal user of this program for over 5 years now, and I must say that I wouldn’t change it for a thing. I’ve used other programs and this one surpasses them all. Just what they offer for free is superb. Plus, you can use Team Viewer on many mobile devices, like the iPhone, iPad, and Andriod OS.

The program is very reliable and versatile. You can access your information from anywhere in the world. Also, do you have family that lives far away and they depend on you when they need tech support? No problem!  You can check their computers any time with Team Viewer, and the beautiful thing is that it is very secure. Every time you start it it create a completely new user number and password, so your family’s privacy is A+ ok.

Walt calls iPad “evolutionary rather than revolutionary”

02 Apr

As a fervent iPad user, I am amazed on a daily basis by the power and portability of the iPad. I find that it doesn’t meet, but exceed my expectations. However, some of other [famous] reviewers find that, although it’s a great product, it’s still not awesome.

Consider a snippet from Walt Mossberg’s review:

“The iPad 2 does have some drawbacks. Its cameras take mediocre still photos and Apple won’t even reveal their megapixel ratings. The company says they were designed for video, not still photography. They did capture decent video in my tests, including high-definition video from the rear camera and video good enough from the front camera for satisfying video calling. But, for a company known for quality, which bundles a new still-photo app with the device, the cameras are disappointing.”

Nonetheless, I must agree with Walt. Taking still images with the iPad camera is a disappointment. On the other hand, the iPhone 4′s camera take gorgeous pictures [in the favorable lighting, of course]. I wish that Apple would have manufactured these with better cameras. We must understand, of course, that the quality of a camera does not only stand in its ‘megapixels,’ but in the width of the lens. Therefore, better cameras would render the iPad thicker….and clunkier!

So, I think that the camera on this device is good enough for what I will use it for. If I am in dire need of taking some pictures, I can always use my real camera, or my iPhone if the camera is not handy.

So Walt, yes, we can agree that the the iPad is “thin, not picture perfect.”
